Rep. Jacobs Joins Jewish Democrats on Statement on Cynical Republican Proposal Pitting American Support for Global Democracy and Allies Against Urgent Domestic Expenditures

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs joined a coalition of Jewish Members of Congress to issue a statement on the cynical Republican proposal to pit American support for global democracy and key American allies on $14 billion of funding cuts to the Internal Revenue Service. The below statement was signed by Reps. Sara Jacobs (CA-51), Jerry Nadler (NY-12), Brad Sherman (CA-32), Adam Schiff (CA-30), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), Steve Cohen (TN-09), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Brad Schneider (IL-10), Lois Frankel (FL-22), Susan Wild (PA-07), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Dean Phillips (MN-03), Mike Levin (CA-49), Kim Schrier (WA-08), Jake Auchincloss (MA-04), Kathy Manning (NC-06), Becca Balint (VT-AL), Greg Landsman (OH-01), Seth Magaziner (RI-02), and Jared Moskowitz (FL-23):

“At this moment of great international peril, the United States must unify in support of our close democratic ally Israel in its fight against the terrorist organization Hamas.  Unfortunately, in his first action as the newly-minted Speaker, Speaker Johnson has chosen to play cynical political games by conditioning emergency aid to Israel on cuts to the domestic budget in an effort to divide the Congress for partisan gain.

“Speaker Johnson’s partisan maneuver would set a dreadful precedent: No House Speaker has ever pitted American support for democratic allies and global security against domestic expenditure in this way, and it will be a very dark road to go down if the House GOP were to prevail on this matter.  At a time when unified American support is essential not only to the future of Israel, Ukraine and other democratic allies, but also as a signal of strength against Iran, Russia and the world, Speaker Johnson instead has chosen to undermine our allies to score political points at home. The net effect of this ploy will be to reduce the existing overwhelming bipartisan support for Israel within Congress and jeopardize our ability to support our allies around the world.

“We fully expect the Senate in bipartisan fashion to reject this divisive maneuver and to pass the President’s requested emergency supplemental package, and we urge the Senate to do so promptly. We must maintain bipartisan unity in this moment of terror, war, and danger around the world, and we look forward to voting in overwhelming numbers, on a bipartisan and bicameral basis, for President Biden’s complete supplemental military and humanitarian aid package, including strategic and military assistance to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, and humanitarian assistance to Gaza, Israel and Ukraine to deal with extreme crisis conditions caused by two major wars. We need serious legislation now, not the irresponsible GOP’s political graffiti that raises our deficit and undermines our leadership on the world stage.”
