Flooding Resources
Recovering from San Diego’s January Storms
Since January’s winter storms, it’s been incredible to see our community rally together to help one another recover and rebuild.
While we work as a community to recover and rebuild, I’m grateful that President Biden heeded our San Diego congressional delegation’s calls and issued a major disaster declaration for San Diego County, unlocking much-needed federal funds and resources.
My office has compiled the following resources to help those impacted by the storms.
FEMA Resources:
If you’ve suffered damage to your home, business, property, or suffered any other related losses from January’s storms, you can apply for FEMA assistance by:
-
Calling 1-800-621-3362
-
Visiting online at DisasterAssistance.gov
-
Downloading and using the FEMA App
Once you register with FEMA, it takes about 20 minutes to complete the process. You will be asked to provide your name, phone number, social security number, and address of damaged property.
In 7-10 days, FEMA will send an inspector to your property to verify the damage, and the claim will then go to a FEMA processing center where FEMA will determine how much relief you’ll receive directly. FEMA may offer rental assistance, grants for repairs to homes, funding to replace uninsured property damage, and assistance for other damages.
Local Resources:
Sweetwater Authority Governing Board provides support to local residents impacted by recent flooding and encourages those impacted to determine eligibility here.
Report damage by calling the City of San Diego’s dispatch center at 619-527-7500. The city encourages people to report flooding to sidewalks, streets, clogged storm drains, and more. You can use the Get it Done app to report non-emergency damages.
Contact your property insurance carrier to report damages to your property, and learn how to file a claim with the City of San Diego for flood damage.

Tax Relief:
I led our San Diego congressional delegation in urging the IRS Commissioner to extend San Diego’s federal tax filing deadline – and I’m so glad he listened!
Now, residents and businesses living and operating in San Diego County have until June 17th to file individual and business tax returns and to make tax payments. For more information, visit the IRS Tax Relief in Disaster Situations website here. The California Franchise Tax Board also extended state individual and business tax filings and payments to June 17th. More information about state tax filings can be found here.
SBA Disaster Assistance:
The SBA provides low-interest disaster loans to help businesses and homeowners recover from declared disasters. You can see if you’re eligible and apply here. To manage your SBA disaster loan, click here.
