Know Your Reproductive Rights & How To Access Abortion Care
As a 35-year-old woman, reproductive health care is my health care. That’s why the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion was deeply personal for me and millions of other people across our country. Since then, 21 states have restricted or banned abortion access.
I’m so proud to be from California – a state that overwhelmingly voted to enshrine the rights to contraception and abortion in our state constitution, has passed strong privacy laws, and has welcomed people from all over the country in need of abortion care. But it’s still important that we know our rights in the post-Roe era.
I hope you find the below resources helpful to learn more about our rights and how to access the care you need in California.

What I’m Doing
Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus
As a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus (PCC), I’m working with over 150 other Members to fight for our fundamental right to reproductive health care.
You can learn more about PCC here.
Legislation
I'm working to ensure that reproductive health care, including abortion care, isn’t only legal, but affordable, accessible, and stigma-free for all. Read more about my work here:
Reproductive Data Privacy
You might be surprised to learn that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA only protects information between you and your doctor. It doesn’t protect consumer data like period tracking apps, fertility tracking apps, search and browsing history, location data, and so much more. This information can be collected, shared, and sold without our consent, and even used to investigate and prosecute anti-abortion laws – especially in the post-Roe era. That’s why I introduced the My Body, My Data Act to create a new national standard to protect our reproductive and sexual health data.
Reproductive Health Records
HIPAA’s existing privacy protections aren’t prepared for the post-Roe era– because some exceptions allow health care providers to share patients’ abortion data. That’s why I introduced the Secure Access for Essential Reproductive (SAFER) Health Act, which would strengthen HIPAA to protect patients and ensure doctors can’t share their personal health information related to abortion or pregnancy loss without consent.
Abortion Rights
I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify the right to an abortion into law.
Contraception Rights
In the post-Roe era, our rights to birth control are also under attack. I’ve used various birth control methods throughout my life – like birth control pills, an IUD, and Plan B – just like millions of other people. Birth control is essential health care. That’s why I’m proud to co-lead the Right to Contraception Act to codify access to birth control into federal law.
Military Community
Our military community sacrifices so much for all of us – and they’ve earned and deserve full access to reproductive health care, including abortion. But unfortunately, federal law bans TRICARE from covering abortions and bans military treatment facilities from providing abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the person’s life. That’s why I’m co-leading the MARCH for Servicemembers Act, which would allow the Department of Defense (DoD) to use available funds and facilities to perform abortions.
