Rep. Sara Jacobs Praises Reports of G20 Granting Membership to the African Union

Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, praised today’s reports of the Group of 20 (G20) planning to grant membership to the African Union (AU).

In June, Rep. Sara Jacobs led House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (NY-05) and all the Democratic Members of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa in introducing a resolution supporting the African Union’s permanent membership in the Group of 20.

Rep. Sara Jacobs said, “I’m so glad that the international community is finally recognizing the African continent’s importance by welcoming the African Union into the G20. We should have all perspectives at the table – especially those from the Global South – as we debate and decide on solutions to address global, interconnected challenges from the climate crisis to democratic backsliding. This is an important step forward in ensuring that our global governance system is more just, fair, inclusive, and representative of all the voices in the world.”
