Rep. Sara Jacobs Secures $1.1 Million in Federal Funds for San Diego to Care for Migrants and Asylum Seekers at the Border
Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51) and the San Diego congressional delegation secured over $1.1 million in federal funding today for San Diego non-profits to care for migrants and asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. This new tranche of funding brings the grand total of federal funds to nearly $30 million for San Diego over the past three months.
Rep. Sara Jacobs and the San Diego congressional delegation secured more than $360 million in federal funding last year for FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program (SSP) to help cities like San Diego care for migrants and asylum seekers through shelter, food, transportation, basic health and first aid, the construction and expansion of shelters, and more. The Congresswoman’s office has since encouraged local jurisdictions and organizations to apply for and take advantage of this federal funding.
Rep. Sara Jacobs said, “It’s up to Congress to pass comprehensive and inclusive immigration reform so we can tackle the root causes of migration and alleviate the burden on our border communities like San Diego. But in the meantime, I’m so proud to have secured more than $360 million as a stop-gap so we can treat everyone coming to our border with respect, human decency, and the basics like food, shelter, and first aid. Today, I secured another $1.1 million of that federal funding – bringing the grand total for San Diego to nearly $30 million – and I’m so glad that our non-profit partners have taken advantage of this opportunity. I will continue to push for more resources and support for San Diego, including another $600 million for this program in FY 2024, so that all levels of government can work together to address our border issues.”
