Sixth Child Tax Credit Payments Arrive for San Diego Families, Benefiting More Than 100,000 Children in CA-53
Congresswoman Jacobs pushing for continuation of expanded Child Tax Credit in Build Back Better Act
San Diego, CA - Today, the Treasury Department distributed the sixth round of enhanced monthly Child Tax Credit payments, which Congresswoman Jacobs fought to include in the American Rescue Plan. This legislation made historic progress by expanding the Child Tax Credit to include more low-income households; increasing the maximum credit amount for families; and creating a new process for benefits to be paid directly to recipients monthly.
Since July, the payments have reached the families of approximately 129,000 children in 83,000 households in California’s 53rd District in San Diego, returning over $192 million to local families across 2021. Nationally, the Child Tax Credit has contributed to a 28 percent reduction in child poverty compared to what the poverty rate would have been in its absence.
Last month, Congresswoman Jacobs voted for the Build Back Better Act, which would extend the Child Tax Credit expansion through 2022 and make the tax credit fully refundable. This means that the Child Tax Credit would continue to be available to the 27 million children who previously earned a partial credit or no credit due to low parental income.
To mark the December monthly payments, Congresswoman Jacobs released the following statement:
“Supporting kids and families is one of the smartest investments we can make, and I am so proud to have helped secure the expanded Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan. Six months of direct payments have reached 129,000 children in my district in San Diego, and millions of more families across the country. The Child Tax Credit is improving lives and helping families afford all the costs that come with raising kids, from school supplies and clothes to child care and saving for college. These payments are making real, tangible change for families in our district and now we need to fight to keep them going.
“We can’t lift millions of children out of poverty only to let them fall back down. The House did its job and extended the new Child Tax Credit payments by passing the Build Back Better Act. Now we need the Senate to do the same, and soon, so that families will receive their next payment without delay in January.”
