Congresswoman Jacobs Votes for Critical Immigration Bills to Protect Dreamers and Agricultural Workers

Today, the House of Representatives took decisive action to modernize and reform our immigration system, passing H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, and H.R. 1603, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act.

The American Dream and Promise Act provides a path to lawful permanent resident status for Dreamers and certain individuals who either held or were eligible for Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure status. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act modernizes and reforms the H-2A Visa program to give employers more flexibility and allows agricultural workers, their spouses, and children to earn legal Certified Agricultural Worker (CAW) status through continued agricultural employment.

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-53) proudly voted for both bills and released the following statement:

“As the proud representative of San Diego, a border community that has been shaped and enriched by immigrants, I was honored to stand with my colleagues and vote for the American Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. The vast majority of Americans support a path to legal status for Dreamers, who deserve the opportunity continue to thrive in the only home they have ever known and to pursue their destinies here, free from fear of deportation.

“Dreamers, farm workers, and other immigrants are integral to our communities and our economy. And so many of them are the essential workers who have carried us through this pandemic.

“These bills are only the first step for Congress and the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that our immigration system reflects our values and that the chaos and cruelty of the previous administration is left in the past.

“While many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle continue to play politics, use scare tactics, and demonize immigrants, I am proud that House Democrats are focused on restoring our sense of decency, keeping families together, and bringing clarity and stability to our immigration system.”
