More Than 148,000 Children in CA-53 to Benefit from Expanded Child Tax Credit

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs leading effort to make historic expansion of Child Tax Credit permanent

New analysis conducted by Co-Equal shows that 148,800 children in California’s 53rd District will benefit from the expanded Child Tax Credit, an important provision of the American Rescue Plan championed by Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-53).

Designed to benefit low- and middle-income families, an estimated 84% of children in the 53rd District live in households that will receive the expanded Child Tax Credit. 44,600 households will receive an average benefit of $2,900, and an estimated 12,400 children will be lifted out of poverty.

Nationwide, the expanded Child Tax Credit is projected to cut childhood poverty in half, lifting 5 million American children out of poverty.

The American Rescue Plan expanded Child Tax Credit eligibility to include more low-income households; made the benefits fully refundable, meaning they do not have to be paid back later; and created a new process for benefits to be paid directly to recipients monthly. The IRS has announced that the first monthly benefits will hit bank accounts in July.

The expanded Child Tax Credit included in the American Rescue Plan is set to expire next year, and Congresswoman Jacobs is now leading the effort in Congress to make the expansion permanent. Last month, Congresswoman Jacobs led a letter from freshman members to President Biden, urging him to do the same.

Statement from Congresswoman Sara Jacobs:

“I was so proud to work with the White House and my colleagues in Congress to make sure the expanded Child Tax Credit was included in the final package of the American Rescue Plan – and I am so grateful that those investments will directly benefit more than 148,000 kids in the 53rd District.

“Now, we must make that expansion, and those benefits, permanent. We can’t go back to the ways things were before COVID. It is unacceptable to allow any of those kids fall back into poverty once this crisis is over.”

On Monday, Congresswoman Jacobs met with child care providers and parents in Linda Vista to discuss the Child Tax Credit and child care needs for local families. This evening, she will participate in the 25th Annual Stand for Children Day.
