Remarks from Congresswoman Jacobs on Impeachment Vote

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-53) voted today in favor of the impeachment of President Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection against the United States. 

Congresswoman Jacobs, who was in the House Gallery on Wednesday when the Capitol was breached, spoke during the floor debate on the measure, referencing her experience working on post-conflict stabilization. Prior to being elected to Congress, Jacobs served at the United Nations and the State Department where she specialized in post-coup transitions and responses to electoral violence and violent extremism in Fiji, Mali, Nigeria, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Congresswoman Jacobs’ remarks on the floor:

Madam Speaker, the response to political violence must always be accountability. Without accountability, more violence will follow.

I learned that working at the United Nations and the State Department in conflict settings around the world. And the United States Congress is now a conflict setting.

A violent mob threatened our lives in this chamber, and almost succeeded, incited by the President of the United States, who broadcast lies about the outcome of the election.

We must hold this President accountable. It is the only way to protect our democracy.

Jacobs previously served as a Conflict and Stabilization Policy Officer in the U.S. Department of State during the Obama Administration, in the Innovation Unit at UNICEF, in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations, on the foreign policy team for Secretary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, and most recently as a Scholar in Residence at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego.
