Rep. Sara Jacobs Leads San Diego Congressional Delegation in Urging IRS to Extend Federal Tax Deadline Given January Storms
Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51) led the San Diego congressional delegation, including Reps. Juan Vargas (CA-52), Mike Levin (CA-49), and Scott Peters (CA-50), in urging the IRS Commissioner to extend the federal tax deadline from April 15th to June 17th for San Diego County residents, who are continuing to recover from the severe storms and devastating floods in late January.

The lawmakers wrote:
“We write to bring your attention to the Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for the State of California issued on February 19, 2024, in response to the severe storm and devastating floods in San Diego County between January 21-23, 2024.
“Last month, San Diego County received more than a month’s worth of rain in only six hours, causing floods that damaged infrastructure, homes, businesses, and automobiles across the region. Tragically, three fatalities were reported in connection with this storm, with many more at risk. After FEMA officials completed extensive investigations and surveys of the damage in San Diego County, President Biden approved a Major Disaster Declaration for California to allow federal funding to assist with state, local, and Tribal recovery efforts.
“We are so grateful for President Biden’s assistance, and we are now respectfully and urgently requesting tax relief on behalf of our constituents. As you know, the April 15 deadline for federal tax filing and tax payments is quickly approaching, and many San Diegans find themselves unprepared and unable to meet that deadline. We respectfully request that the deadline be extended until June 17 – matching the tax relief offered after similar federal disaster declarations this year – for San Diego County residents who continue to recover from the January floods. This additional time will allow individuals, families, and businesses impacted by the storm more time and dignity in assessing and responding to damages they are experiencing, without the pressure of a looming federal tax filing deadline.
“Thank you for your time and your attention to this urgent request.”
Following the storm, Rep. Sara Jacobs visited Rolando Park, Rolando Village, Mission Valley, Spring Valley, and Lemon Grove with local elected officials to assess the extent of the flooding damage. She led the San Diego congressional delegation in urging President Biden to approve a federal emergency declaration to help San Diego address the storm damage if the federal criteria is met. Since President Biden followed through on the San Diego congressional delegation’s request and issued a major disaster declaration, Rep. Jacobs has continued to urge local residents to apply for FEMA assistance.
