Congresswoman Sara Jacobs Sworn In to Represent California’s 53rd District for 117th Congress

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA-53) was officially sworn in as a Member of the House of Representatives for the 117th Congress during a ceremony today in the House Chamber in the United States Capitol. The oath of office was administered by Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Congresswoman Jacobs’ father, Gary Jacobs, watched from the House gallery, in keeping with COVID protocols.

Congresswoman Jacobs – who serves as the Freshman Representative to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and sits on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs – will also be participating in a ceremonial swearing-in celebration with her predecessor, retired Congresswoman Susan Davis, at 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET. Members of the press can RSVP here.

Following her swearing in, Congresswoman Jacobs released the following statement:

“I am honored and humbled to be sworn in today as a Member of Congress representing my hometown and the community I love. I am ready to do the hard work of getting us out of this pandemic, rebuilding the American people’s trust in our government and institutions, and bringing a new approach to governing.

“Today, I became the youngest member from California and the third youngest member in all of Congress. And I take that responsibility seriously — to ensure my and future generations have a world that is livable, an economy that is equitable, and that the United States rebuilds our institutions and our standing around the world.

“There is so much work to be done. I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and am looking forward to getting started.”

A third-generation San Diegan, Congresswoman Jacobs attended local public schools before graduating from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master of International Affairs degree in International Security Policy and Conflict Resolution.

She currently serves as the Chair of San Diego for Every Child, a coalition dedicated to ending the experience of child poverty in San Diego County, which she founded in 2018. She previously served as a Scholar in Residence at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego and as the Founding CEO of Project Connect, an international education non-profit. She also served in the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations at the U.S. Department of State; as a foreign policy advisor to Secretary Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign; as the Big Data Lead in UNICEF’s Innovation Unit; and as an Electoral Specialist for the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

California’s 53rd District includes portions of San Diego, Chula Vista, and El Cajon, as well as La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and the unincorporated communities of Bonita and Spring Valley.
