Congresswoman Sara Jacobs Touts Expanded Child Tax Credit Payments at Child Tax Credit Awareness Event with Local YMCA

Today, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs joined the South Bay Family YMCA to mark the first monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit and spread awareness about the newly expanded benefits. Congresswoman Jacobs toured the YMCA’s day camp at Casillas Elementary School in Chula Vista before talking with parents and children who are benefitting from the Child Tax Credit and hearing about what additional support Congress can provide.

Congress passed the expanded Child Tax Credit as part of the American Rescue Plan, which President Biden signed into law in March, putting money in families’ pockets monthly and increasing the total amount of the tax credit. Recent analysis by Co-Equal estimates that 84.7% of children in California’s 53rd Congressional District, or 148,800 children, will benefit from the expanded Child Tax Credit. Analysis also shows that the Child Tax Credit has the potential to cut childhood poverty in half, making the expansion of the Child Tax Credit responsible for the largest ever one-year decrease in childhood poverty.

“Fighting for kids and families across the 53rd District is my top priority, and I am so proud to have secured this investment in American families alongside my Democratic colleagues and President Biden,” said Congresswoman Sara Jacobs. “What I heard from parents at the South Bay Family YMCA today is what I’ve heard from parents in every corner of my district: the expanded and improved Child Tax Credit will be life-changing for their families and families all across the country. This is an exciting and incredibly meaningful day.”

Qualifying families will receive $300 per month for each child ages 0-5, and $250 per month for each child ages 6-17. The thresholds to qualify for the maximum benefit are below, though most households with children will qualify for at least a partial credit. Payments will phase out by $50 for every $1,000 earned above these thresholds.

The thresholds for the full benefit are as follows:

  • Married couples with incomes under $150,000
  • Families with a single parent with incomes under $112,500
  • Everyone else with incomes under $75,000

The IRS has created a Child Tax Credit Update Portal here, and a Non-Filer tool to allow parents who do not meet the income threshold to file taxes to provide their information in order to receive the Child Tax Credit. Families with questions about eligibility or enrollment should contact Congresswoman Sara Jacobs’ office at (619) 280-5353 or visit ChildTaxCredit.gov.
