Jacobs Funding Request for San Diego Central Mobility Hub Included in House Surface Transportation Bill

Member-designated Transportation Project Request from Jacobs first step in $25 million in funding to connect San Diego International Airport to public transportation

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-53) has secured $25 million in federal funding for the Central Mobility Hub in San Diego in H.R. 3684, the INVEST in America Act, released this week by House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Peter DeFazio (OR-4).

The INVEST in America Act passed out of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure at 5:30 AM ET this morning and will now move to the House Floor for a vote of the full body. The legislation must pass both chambers of Congress and be signed by the President before funds can be distributed.

Jacobs formally submitted a funding request for the Central Mobility Hub to be included in the legislation – a five-year, $547 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill that directs federal investments in roads, bridges, transit and rail – earlier this spring. The funding is designated for the design work for the Central Mobility Hub and to support the completion of the environmental study for the facilities. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is the project sponsor.

San Diego is the only major city in the United States without a quick and convenient connection between the airport and public transportation. The Central Mobility Hub would correct this problem and connect the airport with the rail corridor that is home to Amtrak, Coaster Commuter Trains, and the San Diego trolley.

“The Central Mobility Hub is an investment in San Diego’s future, and I’m proud to have secured $25 million in federal funding for this project in the House surface transportation bill. Connecting the airport with public transportation is an important step in making our transportation network more equitable, easing congestion, and encouraging more sustainable transportation options,” said Congresswoman Jacobs.

The request was submitted jointly with Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52).
